McAfee Review - UPDATED Sep. 2017
McAfee has been around since 1987 and is considered one of the pioneers and best companies in the antivirus and computer security business. Today, the company has merged with Intel Security and its antivirus packages are often built into computers like Dell and Lenovo.
Package Information and Features
McAfee offers three great packages – McAfee AntiVirus Plus, McAfee Total Protection and McAfee LiveSafe. The AntiVirus Plus package includes the award-winning antivirus program for Windows, free support and it covers all the devices you own with one subscription. The McAfee Total Protection, which is the most comprehensive package, includes all that plus encryption software for the files you wish to protect additionally, the TrueKey app for storing all your user names and passwords, anti-spam program and parental controls.
The McAfee LiveSafe is truly a life saver, just as its name suggests. It works on Windows, Android, iOS and Mac, includes the TrueKey manager we mentioned above, blocks all types of viruses, malware, spyware and undesired programs, as well as ads, protects your WiFi, optimizes your computer, provides data backup and anti-theft protection for mobile devices, and these are just some of the features included in this terrific package. There is also the McAfee Internet Security package which includes everything Total Protection does, except for the encryption software.
Ease of Use
Anyone who’s ever tried McAfee will swear that it’s one of the easiest antivirus programs to use. The program uses a main dashboard that includes all the details you need to know about your antivirus program, scans, updates and potential dangers. Everything is perfectly customizable and incredibly intuitive. Whether you want to check your updates, do a quick scan or a full, all-system scan, it’s all right there in front of you, two clicks away.
In the past, McAfee could not exactly boast the best possible packages and features. Some of their products were known to underperform, but fortunately this hasn’t been the case for a while and the current generation of products is extremely reliable, simple and efficient. For example, all the features in the package are already configured when you install them on your device and there’s no need to reboot. Features like parental control, additional software and apps, scheduled scans and all the settings are very easy to configure and customize and you shouldn’t expect to spend more than several minutes to set the whole thing up. Once you do, the program runs on its own and only reminds you of its existence when there’s an intrusion or a problem and it requires your instructions on what to do.
Reliability and Performance
If you check online reviews and customer feedback, you’ll find that McAfee is extremely satisfying when it comes to reliability, both in terms of real-time checks and traditional forms of protection such as detection through scanning. Upon testing the packages, we can only confirm that it’s definitely true, especially when it comes to classic scanning and virus detection.
As for the resource usage, McAfee is somewhere in the middle, compared to other AV programs on the market. The PC boot scan is relatively fast and the program does not interfere with your computer’s performance even when running a full scan, which can take a while and in the case of some other anti-virus programs, may significantly slow down your device. What puts it in the middle range of products is the fact that the full scans take forever.
McAfee does very well in this department too. They have an extensive FAQ section, good video and written tutorials and provide 24/7 live assistance chat. There is also e-mail support, which is fast and reliable, and the staff is friendly and very helpful. If you encounter any problems you can’t fix yourself, you can download an app called Virtual Assistant which will scan your system and solve your issues for you. As for the phone assistance, bear in mind that it is not free, in fact it will cost you $85.
The McAfee Total Protection package costs $49.99 per year, Internet Security is $79.99 per year and AntiVirus Plus is 59.99. The McAfee LiveSafe is $89.99 per year.
Some may say that these prices are a bit exaggerated but if you actually look at competitive products and compare the features you’re getting, you’ll realize that the packages are actually priced pretty fairly, especially the more advanced ones. Plus, the fact that all packages except AntiVirus Plus include up to three different devices really adds to the value. There is also the money back guarantee and free trial for all packages.
While we are still very satisfied with the antivirus we reviewed here, there are many better options that you can find on our Top 10 Best Antivirus Software Of 2016 list.
