ESET NOD32 Review
Our overall impression of the NOD32 Antivirus is that it is very reliable, with a user-friendly interface. The company, ESET, has definitely been keeping up with their good reputation. However, they may be asking too much for their product.
Named after the Egyptian goddess of health, fertility, and protection against disease, ESET is an IT security company based in Bratislava, Slovakia. It was founded in 1992 when authors of the antivirus software, Miroslav Trnka and Peter Paško, established a partnership with Rudolf Hrubý. The company has branch offices in several major cities, such as San Diego, United States; Montreal, Canada; Prague, Czech Republic; Kraków, Poland and others. It also has distributors in over 180 countries around the world. ESET has received many awards and excellent reviews for its antivirus software, NOD32. Incidentally, it is one of only a few companies whose antivirus software’s name is different from the company’s name.
Package Information and Key Features
ESET’s leading product, NOD32 Antivirus, offers some pretty great features which you, as a PC user, will surely find useful. There is, of course, the basic antivirus feature, which means NOD32 will be scanning your computer and removing any viruses it finds. If you browse frequently, you will find the antispyware and exploit blocker exceptionally useful. The exploit blocker is an incredibly interesting feature, because it blocks those attacks which are particularly designed to avoid being detected by the antivirus.
This feature will protect your web browsers, as well as PDF readers, Java software, and other similar software. Another good feature is the advanced memory scanner, which is geared towards malware that uses encryption. Further, a feature PC gamers will love is the gamer mode. It will block scans while you are playing, taking up as few resources as possible.
Reliability And Performance
While the NOD32 Antivirus is not particularly light on the computer’s resources, it does have the gaming mode. The NOD32 Antivirus has proven to be reliable, allowing you to relax when your computer’s safety is in question.
The NOD32 Antivirus makes it a priority to keep your PC and all your data private. Firstly, the antivirus and antispyware features will keep threats such as viruses, Trojans, spyware and ransomware. It will also protect your identity, by stopping fake web sites from stealing your sensitive infromation. It even has a social media scanner feature, which blocks malicious content and helps you manage your information on social media.
Installation and Ease of Use
NOD32 Antivirus installation is said to last a bit longer than most would like, but this is because it asks for a security key, as well as putting the user through several more steps before the installation is complete. User safety was most likely ESET’s priority, rather than shortening the length of the installation.
The software and hardware requirements your Windows PC will have to meet in order for NOD32 versions 9.x, 8.x and 7.x to work are not particularly demanding. If your operating system is Windows 10, 8.x, 7, Vista or Home Server, you will need a 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor; 512 MB (1 GB for Vista x64) RAM of system memory; 320 MB available space and Super VGA (800 × 600).
On the other hand, if you are using Windows XP with service pack 3, the requirements are a bit lower: Windows XP Service Pack 3 is required for best performance; 400 MHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor; 128MB RAM of system memory; 320 MB available disk space and Super VGA (800 × 600).
The plus side is that all of these requirements are lower than those an average modern PC will have, so you will most likely meet them.
The most eye-catching and well known visual characteristic of NOD32 is the futuristic-looking robot/android. It has proven to be a very popular mascot, so it’s obvious why they’ve been keeping it around even as the antivirus versions were changed and updated.
The interface of the antivirus itself is rather easy to navigate. It is straightforward and should be easy to understand for any average home PC user, after perhaps a little getting used to of course. There are even keyboard shortcuts you can use, which is pretty neat.
On the left side of the interface window you have several basic categories to chose from: computer scan, update, tools, setup, help and support and news. On the right side you will find additional options depending on which category you selected. All in all, the interface is user-friendly, has a pleasant but simple futuristic design, and most importantly, it is efficient in the sense that the user will easily find any option they are looking for.
ESET support offers help for home users with issues such as download or installation help, activation issues, and product update troubleshooting. There is also a video library with tutorials. Most of the support and help, however, is online-based in the sense that you will not be interacting with any personnel.
For their NOD32 Antivirus product, ESET offers several plans to choose from, depending on how long you plan to use the software. There is also an option to register your product for 1, 2, 3 or 4 PCs.
For a single year license for 1 PC, the NOD32 Antivirus costs $30.40, while a renewal will set you back $21.28. This pretty much amounts to an average price when other basic antivirus products are considered.
You can purchase up to 4 PC licenses, with the prices for each being obviously proportionally higher.A 1 year license for 2 PCs is $46,76 with the renewal costing you $32,72. A 3 PC license is $60,18 with a $42,12 renewal charge. Finally, the 4 PC license will cost you $80,20, with the renewal being $56,12. And just to clarify, when you pay the renewal charge after a year, you are renewing it for a second year, and you will be paying the same renewal price every consecutive year. This actually makes more sense than having to buy a two or more year’s license in advance, as some other antivirus companies ask you to do.
Besides their best selling product on which the company’s reputation was built – NOD32 Antivirus – it is worth mentioning that ESET offers some other computer security products as well. They are ESET Smart Security, ESET Mobile Security for Android and ESET Parental Control for Android. If you are looking for antivirus software, though, NOD32 is your best bet.
