BullGuard Antivirus Review

UPDATED Oct. 2021

When it comes to the BullGuard Antivirus, we’d say the product is not as well known as perhaps it deserves to be. Independent tests show it to be reliable and secure, neck and neck with some of the other top antivirus software brands. It has great active security features, and the UI is well organised and easy to use even for beginners.

The tech support is top-notch, offering all forms of help instantly, including remote access. There is even an option for the support team to remotely install the program for you! In addition, the pricing and plans are quite sensible and flexible. Let’s take a closer look at some of these useful features BullGuard Antivirus has to offer.

Company Overview

Bullguard is a privately owned, global PC security company. It was founded in Denmark by Morten Lund and Theis Søndergaard in 2001, with the hope of creating a good both private and  business PC security product which would keep each user safe. Other than PC security programs, it is famous for developing the world’s first IoT threat checker – a radically important innovation.

Package Information and Key Features

Bullguard Antivirus is what you could call an all in one PC security suite. It includes virus and malware protection features, customisable scans, browsing safety control, and of course spam protection. It’s basically everything a home PC user needs to keep their information and files secure. However, unlike some of its competitors, it still hasn’t evolved ransomware protection.

Firstly, let’s take a closer look at the antivirus feature. It combines signature-based and behavioral-based detection to ensure the viruses will be stopped before they infect your PC and do any damage to it.

BullGuard also includes adware removal. Yes, adware is not as dangerous as malware, but it can mess with your browser settings and make surfing the internet more difficult.

The spam filter, apart from filtering out spam messages from your e-mail, will also protect you from phishing scams, filtering them out. It also includes a safe browsing feature, preventing you from running into malicious code on certain web sites.

Finally, BullGuard Antivirus is very light on your system performance, which means it will minimally slow your system down. You will have no trouble using your PC regularly, whether you are using an Internet browser, playing a computer game, or using any other program. Your Windows system will be running as smoothly as ever.

Reliability And Performance

Many independent tests have been run to evaluate BullGuard Antivirus’ performance and security reliability, and the results have for the most part been close to perfect. In performance, protection and usability tests, BullGuard Antivirus has very few competitors and is always at least in the top 4 or 5. Considering that the tests we have taken into account were done independently, this is really saying something about the quality and good performance of the product.

One of the incredibly useful features BullGuard has to offer is early detection, which means it will detect behavioral patterns in virus programs and get rid of them before they get to do any damage. This, combined with signature detection – which entails checking a constantly updating database – means that your PC’s security is obviously being treated very seriously, in both the offline and online sense. Online, it keeps you safe with its spam and phishing filter, as well as browsing protection, so you don’t have to worry about any dangerous web links while surfing the net.

Installation and Ease of Use

A very interesting aspect of the BullGuard Antivirus setup is that their support team can remotely access your computer and do the installation for you! They will take care of things such as uninstalling any other security programs, activating your license, providing a short tutorial and even answering any questions you might have afterwards. This is definitely a very neat feature we haven’t seen before. This is just an option though, and you are free to install the software on your own if you wish.

System Requirements

When it comes to technical requirements, BullGuard Antivirus really doesn’t asks for much. The supported operating system are: Windows 10 / Windows 8.1 / Windows 8 / Windows 7 / Windows Vista – pretty much all the recent ones. The RAM memory required is only 1 GB, and 850 MB of free hard-drive space. And the best part: it works even with a dial-up internet connection. Compared to most antivirus programs out there, this is pretty great.

Our impression of BullGuard Antivirus’ interface design was completely positive, as it is simple and made to be easy to use even for complete beginners. There are even explanations for options, in case you are unsure what you need to choose. This makes it intuitive and easy for less experienced users.

BullGuard offers e-mail or live chat support you can get any time, day or night. The emails are answered very quickly, mostly within the hour, and there is also a forum you can refer to. They even offer online remote access support, similar to how they provide help with the antivirus program instalation. In our opinion, this is pretty good support coverage.

Plans and Pricing:

For a license subscription with BullGuard Antivirus, you have several convenient payment options. The shortest offer is 6 months, and for that you will need to pay $10.12. Very few antivirus plans offer such a short offer – the company clearly has faith that you will wish to continue your subscription. Next, a 1 year subscription is $29.95, while for a 2 year subscription you need to pay $53.93. Finally, the most expensive, 3 year subscription, costs $67.43. Taking into consideration the quality of the product and the plans its competitors offer, we find the pricing to be very reasonable.

Bottom Line

Apart for being an excellent option for the less tech-savvy PC users, BullGuard Antivirus has demonstrated great performance on all supported Windows operating systems. The only flaw might be that it’s not great for detecting ransomware threats. However, it makes up for this with amazing stability, active virus and malware protection, as well as spam and phishing filtering. So, is BullGuard Antivirus worth using? In our opinion, definitely.

It has some nifty features for the price and I definitely appreciate the bonus spam filter. It doesn’t do all that well with malware from my experience.

  2. Minna Wissers | January 14, 2019

Wow, BullGuard has turned out so great for me, since I’m a beginner PC user and not really into all that specific tech stuff. The support team is great and they answer all my questions instantly, when I’m unsure about something. My PC has been clean and running smoothly as far as I can tell, so I’m definitely happy with this antivirus.

While work at the office and don’t use my home PC much, my son and daughter play games on it often and use the internet regularly, so my husband decided we should try BullGuard Antivirus. The kids haven’t been complaining about performance issues and we haven’t had any virus problems so far, so I think the program can really be relied on.

While BullGuard Antivirus might be a light program good for beginners, I find the lack of the anti-ransomware feature really disturbing. The company needs to address this issue ASAP, as ransomware is becoming more and more of a problem daily.
