Bitdefender Review

UPDATED Nov. 2021

Bitdefender’s Antivirus Plus is one of the most popular antivirus programs today, and rightfully so. It provides some of the best security software around, alongside many interesting features. At the same time, independent testing has shown that, year in and year out, Bitdefender’s Antivirus Plus continues to be an excellent performer. Let’s explore some of the most important pros and cons of the product.

Company Overview

Bitdefender is an Internet security company founded in 2001 in Romania by Florin Talpeș. Since then, it has grown exponentially and now has subsidiaries and partners in over 100 countries.

The company focuses on developing internet safety software. They offer various antivirus and antispyware programs aimed against PC security threats such as viruses, Trojans, adware, spam and others. In this sense, Bitdefender probably offers the best feature coverage on the market.

Package Information and Key Features

Bitdefender Antivirus Plus’ features cover everything needed to keep your PC, and you, as its user, completely safe and out of harm’s way. First of all, Bitdefender uses the latest and most advanced detection technology to protect eliminate all kinds of threats: viruses, trojans, ransomware, spyware and everything else out there designed to invade, destroy or exploit your data in some way.

Active processes are constantly monitored in order to instantly identify suspicious program activity. There is also a USB immuniser, which can eliminate threats from your flash drive, which is always handy.

There are all kinds of online-activity protection features as well. Bitdefender will block ransomware, phishing sites, warn you of risky websites and links before you click on them, and there is even a rescue mode which reboots your computer and recovers it from infection.

Reliability And Performance

Tests on Bitdefender Antivirus Plus’ reliability and performance perhaps speak best for the quality of the product. For several years now, Bitdefender has ranked in the top three antivirus products currently available. The impact on your PC’s performance is very small, as Bitdefender Antivirus Plus uses Photon’s performance technology. There is also an option to buy Bitdefender’s PC Optimizer for an additional $59.99 and have very little impact on your PC’s performance when the antivirus is runnin

Bitdefender Antivirus Plus has much better security and privacy coverage than any of its competitors. They have you covered on all fronts, meaning that they will keep an eye on your offline and online data, and any potential viruses, trojans, ransomware, malicious website warnings and so on. With this product, you’ve definitely got your PC security covered and can be sure that your privacy will remain intact.

Installation and Ease of Use

Although for an average computer user the installation and registration most likely won’t be that hard to figure out, Bitdefender offers remote installation and setup in case you are a rookie or just can’t be bothered with the whole process. However, they charge $39.99 for this service, which is a bit pricy if you consider that some of their competitors offer this service for free.

System Requirements

All the system requirements are clearly stated on the Bitfinder Antivirus Pro page, but let’s go over them all the same and see how high their hardware and software demands are.

When it comes to your Windows operating system, Bitdefender supports Microsoft Windows 7 (SP1), Microsoft Windows 8, Microsoft Windows 8.1, and of course Microsoft Windows 10. As for the hardware requirements, they aren’t very high either. You will need at least a 1.6 GHz Dual Core processor, 1 GB or RAM memory and 1 GB of free space on your disk.

However, it is recommended that the software be run on a tad faster processor, such as a 2 GHz Intel CORE 2 Duo and 2 GB of free space, just in case. Apparently, the hardware requirements aren’t very high at all. An average computer user today should have a PC which has hardware components well above these, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

The main software requirement is Internet Explorer version 10 and higher. Normally, IE is needed for programs to be able to access the internet in general, so this comes as no surprise, and it will be in your Windows installation package anyway.

Bitdefender can also integrate with many other programs you might be using like Yahoo Messenger 9 and higher, Skype 6.3 and higher, Mozilla Firefox 14 and higher, Google Chrome version 20 and higher, Thunderbird 14 and higher, Outlook 2007, 2010, 2013 and Outlook Express/Windows Mail on x86

The integration system is one of Bitdefender’s awesome features that most other antivirus programs lack, at least to this extent. It integrates with browsers, messengers and e-mail programs, keeping you safe on all fronts.

The main window is black with a large green check-mark when everything is in order. Depending on the threat level, it turns to yellow or red. You can also choose to do a quick scan, a vulnerability scan, system scan or update in the same window. All of these are graphically pleasing and of minimalist design, making the interface very user friendly. Clicking on any of these will lead you to another window with additional options, very simply organized, so you will have no trouble finding or understanding an option.

Another great feature is Bitdefender’s support, which includes 24/7 phone, email and online support – all this for free, which some competitors charge extra for. Even though the support reviews from users are mostly very positive, there is a warning on Bitdefender’s site that you might need to wait for up to 10 minutes to talk to a person.

Plans and Pricing

Bitdefender offers the possibility of registering your antivirus program for one, two or three years. You can also select whether you want to register only one device, or up to three, five or ten. The prices range from $39.95 for one device for one year, to $339.95 for up to ten devices for three years. You can also choose to have the program be remotely installed and set up for you, which will cost you $39.99 more, but save you the trouble of going through the installation yourself if you are somewhat insecure when it comes to this sort of stuff.

Bottom Line

Obviously we are extremely satisfied with Bitdefender’s Antivirus Pro software product, as it covers so many safety and privacy aspects when it comes to using your PC and the internet. In our opinion, the product is well worth the price and perhaps among the top three antivirus programs currently on the market.

I really like the features, it’s easy to use for a tech ignoramus like me and I haven’t had any virus problems ever since I bought it. Did I mention how cheap it is?

  2. Miley Northman | November 12, 2019

As I’ve been a PC and Internet user for many years now, I’ve tried several security software programs so far. Bitdefender definitely offers the best service so far – it’s got literally everything covered, and doesn’t slow down my computer either. I’d definitely recommend it to any home PC user!

  3. Peter S | November 2, 2019

I can’t deny that Bitdefender has top-notch features and is generally a good quality product, but for this price I feel like some things should have been included which are featured in other products, like the optimizer.

  4. Sally | September 24, 2019

My whole family uses a single PC, and since we had Bitdefender Antivirus Pro installed, we’ve had no problems with viruses or any other threats whatsoever! Even the kids constantly browsing and downloading applications and games doesn’t cause problems, so I guess Bitdefender keeps everything in check.

  5. Brandon Summers | June 5, 2019

I’ve worked as a professional IT consultant for many years now, but at home I’m using Bitdefender for my PC security. It’s the best choice as far as I’m concerned, and has independently proven excellent performance.

  6. L. Parker | December 11, 2018

I’m a rookie PC user and I think this program is a bit too complicated for me. Too many options, too hard to navigate, and very pricey. I could’ve done better with a simpler choice.

  7. Georgia Mller | December 14, 2017

I’m a university student and have been using Bitdefender for two years straight now. It’s kept my PC running smooth and any infections at bay, so I’d say I’m very happy with it.
